My legs hurt very badly after walking?

I went walking two days ago. Nothing strenuous, just a one mile walk, some hills and such. I have done this many times, but not recently. The day after that, the back of my legs hurt in the entire area above my knees. Today it got much worse, to the point where it hurts pretty badly to climb the stairs at my school. What could this be, and what would have caused it?
