I paid the collections agencies?

the debts from 3 credit cards, Kohls, Target and Goodys. Should these original creditors now report to the credit bureaus that they have been paid and reflect a 0 balance? Im confused. Also can someone explain a debt validation letter and exactly how I would go about trying to get a negative account removed? Thnx
